Cosmetic surgery has evolved in time. Before, cosmetic surgeries were only limited to hospitals since patients needed to stay overnight for monitoring. However, some cosmetic surgeries can now be done as an out-patient procedure. As a result, more and more cosmetic surgery centers are sprouting all over America. They open their hands to you and cater all of your cosmetic problems. Liposuction, Botox injections, or a nose lift, you name it!
An out-patient procedure is basically any procedure that can be done without having the patient stay overnight at a facility. A lot of cosmetic surgeries these days don’t use general anesthesia. The usual reason why you need to stay overnight for a cosmetic procedure is because of the general anesthesia administered for the procedure. You need to stay until then next day so you can be monitored, since general anesthesia are prone to complications. Since local anesthesia is now used for a lot of cosmetic surgeries, they can be done on an out-patient basis. That’s why cosmetic surgery centers and clinics are opening up.
However, with cosmetic centers multiplying like rabbits, how do you choose the best and safest one?
This is a very good question. Surgery entails a lot of risks and complications. Bleeding, infection, medication toxicity, and other things that could go wrong are what we want to stay away from. The best way to do this is to choose a safe cosmetic surgery center.
To choose a safe clinic, you will need to check if the center is accredited by legitimate medical organizations. Keep an eye out for clinics that are accredited by the ASPS or American Society of Plastic Surgeons or the CAAASF, otherwise known as the Canadian Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities. These cosmetic surgery centers should be reliable if they are accredited. These medical organizations have strict requirements in the maintenance of health and safety before they can accredit a facility.
You won’t only need to check if the facility is accredited, but you also need to check if the physicians in that center are certified plastic surgeons. You can do this by making sure your physician has been accredited by FRCSC or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or by ASPS (or American Society of Plastic Surgeons).
Just so I can give you an idea why board-certified and accredited physician is important, scan through this list of requirements the ASPS have doctors comply before being accredited:
1.) Have at least a 3-year plastic surgery experience.
2.) Have at least a 6-year experience in surgery.
3.) Have undergone training and experience about every plastic surgery procedure.
4.) Adhere to conducts and ethics code strictly.
5.) Are evaluated for compliance with safety and ethical standards.
6.) Are board-certified by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or The American Board of Plastic Surgeons.
7.) Are undergoing continuing medical education.
8.) Only operate in ASPS accredited facilities.
By now, you have an idea what to keep an eye out for when hunting for a safe cosmetic surgery center. Despite the alluring prices of some cheap clinics, never spend a dime until they’ve proven that they are board-certified. Your money is worthless compared to your safety and well-being.
